    http://blogs.harvardbusiness.org/baldoni/2009/06/collaborate_with_your_contract.html

John Baldoni posted a blog entry at Harvardbusiness.org that underscores the need for smart managers to change the way that they view contractors. Baldoni says that the smart manager views contracted labor as collaborators in the process. It is very insightful and goes along with the Champion attribute of "Connected".

It would be easy to rate ourselves on how connected we are with co-workers and people on our team, but moving forward, especially in the economic times we find ourselves in, we must expand our vision to all stakeholders.

    Quote from the Article:

"Otherwise, you are managing by checkbook rather than by commitment. Stirring commitment in any employee is a challenge but doing it for people who do not report or work for you is doubly difficult."

Very interesting blog post. I think that the point about getting people on board is very important. I think it should go beyond just communicating how important the project is though. For a vendor to be really bought in, they should be involved in the design and planning meetings as much as possible. Getting the vendor involved at this early stage makes them feel like they are part of the team, rather than an outsider that has been hired to complete a task.
