Mike Thompson's
The latest OC poll asked people to tell us how they prefer to connect to others. Overwhelmingly, the results show that people today connect to others mainly via email rather than in person. This is no surprise as our days are filled with back-to-back meetings, business trips, and demands & deadlines that run right up against one another. People multi-task like never before, finding it tough to slow down, look up, and truly to connect to people.
What does it mean that we are now in a day and age that most of our relationships are managed and built on-line, and most of the “connecting” we do is through text? Organizational Champions run fast and hard, yes, but they also step back and find ways to connect to the people and issues around them in a meaningful way.
How do you connect to people in a way that is meaningful and drives results?
Mike,
Internally, I spend much of my time communicating via e-mail. When I need to make sure ask can ask follow up questions in a timely way, I get on the telephone. One of the factories I support is in Thailand, so Skype is a huge help.
With customers, I can make initial calls via telephone, but people buy from people; therefore, we have to build that relationship face to face. Again, I do much better face to face building relationships and having meaningful converstation with new opportunities. Since we are in manufacturing, seeing the product that is to be built is important, to some degree.
Have a great weekend.
Phil
